Ensuring quality service and maintaining high standards as a “globally competitive” school, Philippine Science High School – Western Visayas Campus (PSHS-WVC) achieved the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015 Certification last December 13, 2018.
An ISO Certification is a seal of approval from a third party body that a company runs to one of the internationally recognized ISO management systems; moreover, this certification can be used to tender for business as a proof of the company’s credibility, and also to install confidence in potential clients that the company keeps its promises.
According to Mr. William A. Laride, the PSHS-WVC Quality Management Representative, the school’s management procedures and operations are compliant to the requirements of the ISO, which can be seen in the 2015 manuals, and are mostly focused on documentation, retention of document standards, traceability of documents, and ownership of processes.
PSHS-WVC took the Anglo-Japanese Americans (AJA) Registrars as its certifying body. AJA Registrars operates from a global network of offices and is considered to be the lowest bidder. While there are other certifications many organizations find valuable (ISO 27001, ISO 17799, ISO 20000, ISO 31000, and ISO 12207), PSHS-WVC was able to garner the ISO 9001:2015. The said certification is an operation of management system procedures and a compliance to statutory and regulatory requirements.
Furthermore, ISO 9001:2015 requires for a quality management system wherein an organization is able to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable requirements, and aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
Mr. Laride also explained that this ISO certification is a system-initiated activity and has started last 2016. He and his team completed the first manuals in December 2016 to April 2016.
“Having the ISO Certification makes everyone in the organization protected and confident when it comes to doing their operations,” Mr. Laride added.
In addition, the organization now has more established procedures and processes. Both faculty and staff in PSHS-WVC have already established rules and procedures of how they do things and are also committed to continuously improve their procedure and delivery of service. The delivery of the different committees’ services becomes more efficient because of the followed procedures.
As for the students, the ISO Certification puts them in an education with standards at par with the rest of the intellectually talented and competitive world, preparing them to be world-class scientists who will contribute to nation-building.
“What is good with the ISO is that I and my team conduct internal audit in the different offices in our school. We have internal auditors from both the faculty and staff. We evaluate the different units with regards to compliance of our manuals and regulations,” Mr. Laride said.
PSHS-WVC is already done with the first stage audit last August 2018, and the second stage audit was done last October – November 2018. It obtained its certification last December 13, 2018, and currently, the school is preparing for the surveillance audit.
The Philippine Science High School System is dedicated in providing relevant secondary education with emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and aimed at preparing students to become globally competitive Filipino science and technology leaders and professionals imbued with the core values of truth, excellence, and service to the nation. Moreover, PSHS is committed to continual improvement and compliance to existing statutory and regulatory requirements.
